The Reality Check process, in action...

Overheard...

“We need to take the land use debate out of the context of specific projects and put it where it belongs--with the people who live and work here.  Reality Check gives us a chance to answer a big question: how does the region grow?  The future is on the table to see, touch, and move around.”
-Patrick Callahan, Reality Check Co-Chair

Why Do We Need a Reality Check?

A list of the goals of Reality Check

The Puget Sound Regional Council estimates that by 2040, our region will have grown by 1.7 million people and 1.2 million jobs.  The Cascade Agenda predicts that, by the end of this century, 3.5 million additional people will have moved here -- doubling our current population.  No challenge we face is greater than this challenge of growth, and while we have made steps to address growth and transportation issues, significant work must still be done to preserve our region's strong economy and high quality of life.

Our goals for Reality Check are:

  1. Awareness: Achieve regional perspective and consensus;
  2. Connections: Highlight connections among land use patterns, transportation, environmental impacts and quality of life;
  3. Mobility: Fund mobility by ensuring land use decisions are supported with efficient transportation solutions and reliable funding requirements;
  4. Solutions: Identify and address the barriers to the vision; and
  5. Change: Support political will to realize the vision of quality growth.
